Why are there dark flecks in my Nutritional Yeast?

While we recognize that the dark particles found in Nutritional Yeast are not visually attractive, please be assured that they do not present a food safety issue. Instead, the dark particles are a result of our supplier’s manufacturing process which involves using roller drum technology to produce nutritional yeast flakes. On occasion, yeast can remain on the surface of the roller drum for more than one revolution and, thereby, become darker than yeast which has made only a single revolution. And, although we have process controls and product inspection procedures in place, these darker particles cannot be completely eliminated based on the technology used in the manufacturing process. Again, however, the darker particles are safe to consume.
