All Bob’s Red Mill oats can be prepared in the microwave, though they may require a bit more attention than stovetop cooking. To help prevent oats from boiling over during microwaving, we recommend the following tips:
Tips to Prevent Boilovers
- Use a large, high‑sided bowl and leave it uncovered while cooking.
- Microwave in 30‑second to 1‑minute intervals, stirring between each interval.
- Cooking oats at 20% power can help reduce the chance of boilovers.
- Adding a small amount of butter or oil may help minimize boiling over, both on the stovetop and in the microwave.
- Stir frequently during cooking to keep the oats from foaming up.
Microwaved Steel Cut Oats
To prepare Steel Cut Oats in the microwave:
- Use a large, high‑sided bowl.
- Combine ¼ cup Steel Cut Oats, ½ cup water, and a pinch of salt.
- Microwave in 30‑second intervals, stirring between each, for a total of 5 minutes.
- Let stand for 2 minutes before serving.
Protein Oats & the Microwave
We do not recommend preparing Protein Oats in the microwave, as they are starchier than regular oats and are more likely to boil over. If you prefer to use the microwave, we suggest soaking the oats overnight first. This allows them to absorb the liquid, so the next day you’ll only need to heat them to your desired temperature.
